Xilinx, one of the largest fabless semiconductor companies, has opened a new and expanded regional headquarters in the Changi Business Park, Singapore.

At the event, Xilinx Chairman, CEO and President Wim Roelandts disclosed plans for increased investment in local research and development. The R&D engineering team is focused on

next-generation field programmable gate array (FPGA) design at 45 nanometre (nm) and below for high-performance, low-cost applications.

Also announced was the formation of a joint lab at the Republic Polytechnic (RP), the company's first in Southeast Asia. Donations in silicon and electronic design automation software will enable professors and students to be trained in embedded system design and development for a variety of end applications

In keeping with the company's commitment to community relations at its regional locations, with an emphasis on health, education and social services, donations were awarded to Community Chest, a division of Singapore's National Council of Social Service. The funds will be disbursed to local non-profit organisations, including HCA Hospice Care and the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH). In January 2007, the company also donated to the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Katong School.

At the ceremony, Mr. Lim Hng Kiang, Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, said, "I am glad that Xilinx has trusted Singapore with its key technology. Xilinx's R&D team based here is the first in Singapore to design products based on the 45-nanometer technology node. This is a stamp of recognition for Singapore's IC design abilities, and will help strengthen Singapore's repute in the semiconductor industry."

"Innovation must be done close to the customer," commented Roelandts. "The excellent business environment in Singapore, in proximity to our customers in Asia Pacific, allows us to meet increased customer demand for programmable solutions in the important market for digital consumer electronics. We're proud to play a role in nurturing the talent pool and broadening support here in Singapore, in collaboration with local industry, academia and non-profit organisations."

According to the Economic Development Board (EDB), the semiconductor industry now represents a significant component of Singapore's growth, comprising almost 50% of total electronics output in Singapore. In 2006, Singapore produced about 10 percent of the world's foundry wafer output. Over the past year, Singapore has attracted new investments by leading companies, such as Intel, Micron, Soitec, Qimonda, Siltronic and Samsung. This has cemented the country's attractiveness in the semiconductor industry.

With this news, Xilinx is well positioned to continue to grow at an accelerated rate by meeting increased customer demand for programmable solutions in emerging application segments.
