Samsung sampling 1.8-inch, 64-Gbyte flash drive

News
It has been announced that Samsung Electronics Company Limited (Korea) has started sampling 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch 64-gigabyte solid state drives with a super-fast SATA (Serial ATA) II/native SATA interface.
The drives are targeted at a variety of applications from notebook PCs to corporate servers, and feature sequential write speeds of 100Megabyte per second and sequential read speed of 120MBps. The SSD uses Samsung's NAND and combines a 50nm, single-level-cell (SLC) 8Gb flash chip with a proprietary, high-speed SATA controller and supporting software. It boasts a 3.0 Gbit/second interface speed , said to be double the speed of its SATA I predecessor, yet requiring half as much power as the typical 1.9 Watts consumed by hard drives now used in notebook PCs and only one-tenth the power consumed by enterprise-class 15,000rpm hard drives in servers. Market research firm Web-Feet Research recently estimated the NAND flash based SSD market is expected to show 74% compounded annual growth from 2007 to 2012, reaching US$10billion.
