Infineon head says semiconductor industry needs more support

News
Wolfgang Ziebart, chairman of the board at Infineon Technologies AG, has stated that Germany will only be able to remain a prime site for the microelectronics industry if it changes its economic policies.

As he explained at the Semiconductor Industry Conference 2007 held in Dresden, state subsidies have to be redirected and ‘guiding markets' created.

"Production plants are built wherever state incentives are found."

He also said that Europe was not on the path to success here. Ziebert added that the volume of subsidies should be based on the level provided by countries such as India and China. He said that Europe needs to understand what people in Asia already know, that the semiconductor industry is a growth driver for other economic sectors. He pointed out that some 50 semiconductor production plants are currently under construction worldwide, but only five of them are outside of Asia.
