Asahi Glass now a supply chain partner of Carl Zeiss
Carl Zeiss SMT, a manufacturer of optical systems for chip fabrication has designated its Japanese optical material supplier, Asahi Glass Corporation (Asahi), as a Carl Zeiss SMT Supply Chain Partner.
Asahi supplies quartz glass materials for lens production and is the third materials supplier to achieve this outstanding distinction. The three Supply Chain Partners of Carl Zeiss SMT are involved in a wide range of activities, including processes and developments as well as discussions on market and technology trends. This enables anticipatory, need based development, the co-ordination of production capacities and the timely initiation of further enhancements.
Winfried Kaiser, first Fellow at Carl Zeiss worldwide and head of Product Strategy in the Lithography Optics Division at Carl Zeiss SMT, emphasises: "The materials for our optical components are vital for the performance of the entire lithography system; image quality, long term stability and transmission are only a few of the system features that depend on the substrate material. With the top performance of its quartz substrates, Asahi makes a valuable contribution to our success."
The head of Supply Chain Management (purchasing, supplier & contract management) at Carl Zeiss SMT, Peter Schlindwein, comments: "The appointment of Asahi as a Supply Chain Partner expresses our thanks for excellent co-operation over the past few years. But, it is also intended as an incentive for continued peak performance in future product developments, product quality and delivery reliability as well as for cost reduction through improvements in processes, technologies and quality."
In late March 2007, US glass specialist Corning became a Carl Zeiss SMT Supply Chain Partner, followed in summer 2007 by Heraeus in Hanau, Germany. Asahi is the next materials manufacturer to qualify for this status, additionally safeguarding the supply of Carl Zeiss SMT with substrate materials for optical components.
