European semiconductor sales keep the pace in January

News
European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) reveals semiconductor sales data.
Sales on the European semiconductor market have been weaker in January compared to the previous month, the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) reports today. This pattern is in line with seasonal behaviour and slightly better than the market development observed in the other Regions. Sensors and discretes have been rather stable, while optoelectronics grew well above the worldwide average. Price pressures on computer chips, notably DRAM, but also microprocessors, still drive the market down, despite positive PC sales in the last quarter of 2007. On the other hand, the slowdown in sales of consumer electronics might also explain the decrease in the NAND Flash market. Slower sales of digital signal processors were also reported in January.

More in detail, European Semiconductor sales in January 2008 amounted to US$ 3.444 billion according to WSTS, down 2.5% versus the previous month. This corresponds to a decrease of 1.2% compared to the same month last year. On a YTD basis semiconductor sales declined by 2.4% versus the same period in the year 2007. The exchange rate of the Euro compared to the US dollar further widened its impact on the growth data in the recent months. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in January 2008 were 2.354 billion Euro, down 3.6% on previous month and down 12.1% versus the same month a year ago. On a YTD basis semiconductor sales showed a decline of 13.7% versus the same period in the year 2007.

On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in January 2008 were US$ 21.486 billion, down 3.6% versus the previous month. This results in a flat trend versus the same month in 2007 and on a YTD basis it results in a decline of 0.7%.
