Global MEMS market to cross US$8.65 billion by 2010

News
Global Industry Analysts, Inc predicts impressive growth for MEMS.
The global MEMS market is highly fragmented, and is likely to witness a phenomenal change in the coming years, as integrated circuit (IC) makers would plunge into MEMS production. In addition, several incumbent MEMS companies with internal labs are expected to start sourcing MEMS modules from well established IC producers. World market for MEMS is forecast to maintain a CAGR of over 12.3% over 2001-2010 and reach in excess of US$8.65 billion by the end of the decade. Telecommunication segment represents the fastest growing market for MEMS and would continue to register impressive growth at a compounded annual rate of 30.95% for the years 2001-2010 according to a new report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. Commercial/Industrial segment, by far the largest end use market for MEMS, is likely to retain leadership in the coming years as well, with the market crossing US$4.8 billion in 2010. Computers constitute another significant end user market for MEMS in terms of revenue potential. The solid growth of MEMS market is mainly attributed to increasing popularity of deep reactive ion etch and other process technologies in production of MEMS and wafer level bonding devices for packaging. The market offers numerous avenues for semiconductor makers, who are capable of bearing MEMS costs and overcoming production challenges.

Global MEMS market is characterised with a wide customer base ranging from telecommunications to consumer electronics, industrial and automotive industries. Reflecting the immense popularity and need of this technology, new products and technologies are introduced in the market at very frequent intervals. The overall MEMS market is a highly technology driven, and the product innovations are largely reliant upon customer requirements. Accelerometers gained robustly in 2006, on account of rising usage in cell phones, specifically for peripheral applications including game controllers and pedometers. Microphone integrated cell phones also witnessed greater usage of MEMS. Pressure sensors are also garnering growing popularity in monitoring tire pressure. Detecting chemical and biological weapons is another emerging application area for the MEM sensors.

In future, the overall growth in the automobile and computing sector would have a major positive impact in the MEMS market. Albeit the dominance of commercial applications, especially from the automobile sector, MEMS market's future expansion is likely to be driven by the burgeoning wave of applications within the communications industry, particularly on account of growing preferences of tech savvy consumers. Robotics is yet another segment proffering abundant growth prospects for MEMS.
