Korean semiconductor industry confirms plans for 2008

News
General assembly of Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA) held in Seoul to decide on eight strategic technologies.
On March the 7th a general assembly has been held by KSIA in Seoul, Korea, to focus on the development of eight strategic technologies for 2008. The technologies will include research & development for the semiconductor industry as well as solar semiconductor equipment. An investment of KRW 23 billion for these technologies is planned. Furthermore, KSIA plans to put an efficient system for national R&D projects as well as global co-operation into place.

KSIA plans a total investment of KRW 51.6 billion for national semiconductor equipment commercialisation, development for energy generation and identifying new businesses. KSIA will also rationalise growth engine businesses which includes high voltage / RF elements.

The technologies focused at include optoelectronics for high efficient lighting, next generation sensor systems, extreme ultraviolet interference lithography, security SoC, next generation vacuum processes, system design and prototyping and material development for future substrates.

President Hwang said, “The industry has been the number one export item for the 16 consecutive years despite difficult conditions at home and abroad. We will provide practical support for the industry and work hard to improve policies this year.”

A standardisation is planned for specification and evaluation of thin film vapour deposition and lithography. KSIA will carry out evaluations on performance and support projects for equipment manufacturers. Also, special training and consulting will be given on patent and an IP task force will be put in place by KSIA utilising iPAC to help members to deal with patent disputes.

There will also be a tax benefit for plant automation equipment with a tax cut rate of 30% for large companies and 50% for small and medium sized companies.
