State of semicon research

News
A study by the India Semiconductor Association (ISA) has found the top seven technical institutes in India account for about 70%-75% of high-quality semiconductor-related research.;

The study further noted that the government has funded about 85%-90% of the university lab research. The study "on the state of semiconductor related research in Indian universities", conducted by Evalueserve and supported by Intel education and the ministry of communication and information technology (MCIT), was aimed at exploring the role of academia in the growth and development of the semiconductor industry.

The study charted a course of action for building university labs and related research. It has recommended facilitating a public private partnership (PPP) model involving the government, the industry, and the academia to encourage applied semiconductor research. It also suggested setting up of technology business incubators (TBI) as a platform for industry-academia interactions to convert potential research ideas into commercial success.

"The design capacity of semiconductor companies in India resides with the capability to source quality talent and cutting edge research out of our university lab," said Poornima Shenoy, president, ISA. "This exercise is the first complete documentation of such existing work. It will provide a database from which both industry involvement and government support can grow".
