Intel to close Philippines plant

News
Following a staff meeting at the Intel site it would appear the company are planning to move from the region.
According to reports in the economic daily BusinessWorld, Intel is considering pulling out of the Philippines citing a company statement that followed a staff meeting that saw some Intel staff leave in tears. Located south of Manila and employing 3,000 people, Intel Technology Philippines Inc is the US firm's second offshore assembly operations centre in Asia and also serves as a test site. The company states that it has invested around 1.51 billion dollars in the country. No official statement was forthcoming from Intel but local sources were quoted as saying that final decisions have not been made as yet but a firm decision is expected in the next six to nine months. Rumours have surrounded the sites future since 2005 and the ramping up of a more advanced site in Vietnam was seen by many as the death knoll for the Philippine’s site. Although no decisions are public, the staff meeting and subsequent reactions suggest a decision before the year’s end.
