Yole provides MEMS market forecast and tool

News
"In 2012, consumer applications will be more than 40% of the total MEMS market", says Dr Mounier, Yole Développement
Yole Developpement has released a new exclusive toolkit for MEMS industry players, investors and industry suppliers for the evaluation of MEMS markets: World MEMS Market database 2008 (WM2). Yole's database presents detailed MEMS product forecasts for different types of devices: Ink jet heads, pressure sensors, microphones, accelerometers, gyroscopes, MOEMS, micro displays, micro bolometers, microfluidics, RF MEMS, micro tips, micro fuel cells and new emerging MEMS device.
For each MEMS device covered, forecasts are detailed by application (consumer, automotive, medical, life science, telecom, industrial, aeronautics and defence).

According to Dr. Eric Mounier, Senior Analyst at Yole Developpement, "This database is the result of the daily work of our 15 analysts that update the forecasts as soon as we get new information. We know that most product manager don't need such a broad approach but many supplier need to have a global view of the MEMS market to anticipate their own turnover there".

The graph shows what the MEMS devices with the largest market growth rate will be over the next year. WM² will help your company to target the most promising MEMS devices for the markets with the largest market values.

WM² is a valuable tool to understand the market trends of the MEMS business. In WM², MEMS applications have been split into seven major application fields: Automotive, Aeronautics, Consumer, Defence, Industrial, Medical & Life Science and Telecom.
Thanks to WM², one can see that, although the automotive application has been historically a strong market driver for the MEMS industry, it will now undergo a modest growth rate of 3.5% over 2007-2012. On the other hand, medical & life science, consumer and (wireless) telecommunications will largely contribute to the MEMS market after 2010. Their growth rate will be respectively 18%, 11% and 40%.

In 2012, consumer applications (this includes IJ heads, inertial MEMS, micro displays and emerging MEMS devices such as energy harvesting systems, auto focus, micro zoom, micro motors …) will be more than 40% of the total market (in MUS$ value) !
So, we see that consumer is a strong driving force for the MEMS industry to have more integrated devices at lesser cost. Gyroscopes for cell phones or low cost micro mirrors for pico projectors are currently strong business opportunities for the MEMS industry.

One interesting fact coming from WM² is that a strong growth (21%) for defence is also happening (due to the use of high value inertial MEMS for munitions guidance for instance). New MEMS applications and fuel cells markets will have an impact not before 2009. Over 2009-2012, their CAGR will be 67% and 158% respectively.
Also, looking at the general CAGR for the main MEMS categories, it turns out that RF MEMS will have the highest growth (50%), followed by microfluidic chips for drug delivery (42%), Si microphones (32%), microfluidic chips for diagnostics (23%), micro tips and probes (22%) and microbolometers (20%).
