Intel fined by South Korea
The semiconductor giant has been hit with a fine of $25 million for allegedly violating fair trade rules
The antitrust regulator will order Intel to pay $25.4 million for the alleged
violation of fair trade rules. In a statement, the South Korean Trade Commission said it will issue this order because Intel offered rebates to South Korean computer companies and undercut competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
Intel immediately opposed to this ruling and mentioned that possible options are
considered including an appeal. Bruce Sewell, Senior Vice President of Intel, commented in Seoul: “ We are disappointed and we completely disagree with the findings”.
According to the commission Intel provided rebates to Samsung Electronics and several other computer companies to use Intel processors over Intel’s main competitor AMD. Samsung has not provided any comment so far.
Furthermore, the commission has ordered Intel to stop providing rebates on which an Intel spokesman commented: "To ask us to cease and desist behaviour which we are not and never have done is odd."
