Applied Materials set for centre in Singapore

News
The Economic Development Board Chairman, Applied Materials executives, and U.S. Ambassador Patricia Herbold have broken ground for the construction of a new Singapore operations facility that will serve Applied’s business activities throughout Asia. The facility is due for completion in late 2009.
The construction, which will measure 32,000 square metres, will be situated at a “virtual crossroads between India and China”, says Mike Splinter, president and CEO of Applied Materials.

Plans show that the Operations Centre will function as a base for a range of business activities including; global purchasing, manufacturing, sales and engineering. This development will help achieve reductions in material cost and cycle time while expanding Applied’s global capabilities. In an intelligent business move with relation to the current media attention on environmental issues, the facility is designed to standards which the company are optimistic will meet the highest environmental rating available in Singapore. Current plans are inclusive of; an installation of a large solar array, low-e glass curtain walls, LED and fluorescent lighting, an energy efficient air conditioning system and a water treatment and rainwater capture system.

In addition to this, as part of its global commitment to education and improving communities, Applied has announced its sponsorship of the Environment Education Hub at the Marsiling Secondary School.

This considered, it seems that Singapore is welcoming the development: “We are pleased that Singapore has been chosen as its world-class complex equipment manufacturing hub for its Asia Operations Centre." said Lim Siong Guan, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board.
