iSupply acquires Telematics

News
The analyst company acquires automotive electronics analysis firm Telematics Research Group. Terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

iSuppli announced it is driving automotive market research to the next level by acquiring Telematics Research Group (TRG), the provider of vehicle electronics business intelligence.

Established in 2000 and based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, TRG is a worldwide research firm that analyses and forecasts global and regional demand trends for a multitude of automotive and mobile electronics technologies. The company tracks, analyses and forecasts the markets for automotive telematics, navigation, digital entertainment, and advanced driver assistance systems.

TRG’s operations will be integrated with the existing iSuppli Automotive Infotainment and Electronics Services, along with its research on vehicle Microelectromechnical Systems (MEMS), to form a wide-ranging automotive research practice.

Combined with iSuppli’s research on the global electronics, display and digital content markets, the acquisition will help to provide a comprehensive analysis of automotive electronics, technologies and related services.

“TRG has established itself as an unparalleled expert in the world of automotive electronics, attracting a who’s who of automotive industry clients,” said Derek Lidow, president and chief executive officer of iSuppli. “TRG clients have access to the world’s richest database of automotive telematics and infotainment electronics. Hundreds of production vehicles from around the world are profiled, with new entries added every day that reveal insights into hardware, software, services, components and sourcing. The analytical knowledge, experience and databases of the two firms will meld to form an iSuppli research practice that is able to produce the world’s most in depth and actionable market and technology roadmaps for automotive electronics and systems. That’s why we are pleased to welcome TRG and its top flight research staff to the iSuppli team.”

Phil Magney, founder and principal analyst for TRG, said, “TRG is dedicated to helping its customers improve their competitiveness by helping them to get answers to questions, spot trends, compare competitors and minimise poor technology or market decisions. We know iSuppli shares this commitment, and due to this acquisition, we look forward to bringing our automotive research to a wider global audience.” Mr. Magney will head the expanded iSuppli automotive research practice.

Existing TRG offerings will largely remain the same in terms of packaging and coverage. The company’s deliverables and client portals will not change at this time, nor will user names, passwords and service terms. There will be no disruption in service for existing customers.

The TRG acquisition represents the latest development in the efforts of iSuppli to expand its research programmes into new areas. It also complements the firm’s endeavour to enhance coverage of its existing automotive, car electronics and infotainment markets.

In October 2006, iSuppli announced the hire of Richard Robinson, principal analyst for automotive electronics responsible for iSuppli’s research and analysis of the automotive infotainment value chain. In late 2006, iSuppli further augmented its automotive research with the purchase of Japan based Data Garage, an established market intelligence firm whose offerings include analysis of the Japanese automotive electronics industry.

In April, iSuppli announced the acquisition of Germany based Wicht Technologie Consulting (WTC), the leading provider of research on the fast growing markets for photovoltaics and Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS).

“The acquisition of TRG is another key development in iSuppli’s rapid expansion through both acquisitions and organic growth,” Lidow said. “Beyond the recent purchases of first class market intelligence firms and the hiring of a cadre of exceptional experts, iSuppli is making major gains in its existing research programs covering the global electronics, display and consumer markets.

“iSuppli pioneered the concept of application oriented market forecasting for the technology value chain. In these uncertain economic times, global technology firms are finding iSuppli’s applications oriented analysis and our entire portfolio of market intelligences services more valuable than ever. Because of this, iSuppli’s overall revenue continues to rise rapidly, with anticipated growth of 40 percent in 2008.”

Through proprietary database tools and research methodologies, TRG’s services provide in depth coverage of the North American, European and Asia Pacific regions. All company researchers and analysts are assigned country or regional responsibility by technology. TRG analysts and executives bring prodigious experience in technology, journalism, and market analysis.

TRG’s Automotive and Portable/LBS Research Portals are powerful delivery platforms that afford clients the ability to identify trends, evaluate markets, assess competitors, and scrutinise technologies. Under iSuppli, the Research Portals will be licensed annually and augmented by a robust series of special analytical reports.

“One of iSuppli’s chief assets is our worldwide presence, with offices in all major worldwide electronics regions,” said Lloyd Kaplan, chief operating officer for iSuppli. “TRG’s global vision and local coverage make it a perfect match for iSuppli.”
