Coto Tech Presents Ultra-Miniature, MEMS-Based Magnetic Switch

News

The "RedRock" micro-switch is based on unique high aspect ratio MEMS design and manufacturing processes

Stephen Day, Science & Engineering Specialist for Coto Technology, Inc. served as a key presenter at the 59th IEEE Holm Conference on September 25th, 2013 in Newport, Rhode Island.

The IEEE Holm Conference provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments in the field of electric contacts and the application of recent advances in materials and processes in electric, electronic and telecommunication equipment.

Day's topic was "A High Aspect Ratio Microfabricated Reed Switch Capable of Hot Switching". The microfabricated reed switch featured in the presentation was Coto Technology's RedRock Switch - the industry's smallest MEMS-based magnetic reed switch.

With a footprint of less than 2.1 mm2 (1.01 x 2.08 mm), and 0.94 mm in height, RedRock is the smallest MEMS-based reed switch available on the market today. Based on its unique High Aspect Ratio MEMS design and manufacturing processes, the switch provides all of the advantages of conventional magnetic reed switch technology, including zero power operation/consumption and high power switching.

Added to these features are high directionality and sensitivity along with the inherent benefits of MEMS-based design and manufacture, such as item-to-item uniformity, robustness and extremely small size - achieved through batch-processed, wafer level hermetic packaging (WLP).

Introduced earlier this year at "Design West," RedRock is a significant new product line for Coto and represents a major leap forward in providing MEMS-based, small signal switching solutions. Day's associated White Paper, entitled "MEMS-Based Magnetic Reed Switch Technology" can be downloaded from Coto Technology's Resource Library.

Coto Technology is a developer and manufacturer of small signal switching products sold into the Automatic Test Equipment, Data Acquisition, Instrumentation, Process Control, Telecommunications, Medical and Security markets. Coto specialises in the manufacture of relay and switch products.
