CrestaTech files lawsuits for silicon tuner patent infringements
The creator of Smart Tuner Integrated Circuits claims chip manufacturers and TV makers have violated its patents
Cresta Technology has filed separate patent infringement lawsuits against Silicon Laboratories and MaxLinear in the District Court of Delaware.
In the filed complaints, CrestaTech which designs, develops and manufactures silicon tuner chips accuses Silicon Laboratories and MaxLinear of infringing CrestaTech's patents in a number of silicon tuner products.
The lawsuits furthermore list four television set manufacturers for infringing through their use of Silicon Laboratories or MaxLinear silicon tuner chips in television sets, receivers, and other components sold in the United States.
In addition to asking for compensatory damages, CrestaTech is asking for an order to stop the marketing and sale of infringing devices and television sets within the United States.
The three CrestaTech patents in question cover technology that enables a single television receiver to process analogue or digital TV signals in multiple standards, making it possible for a TV to work anywhere in the world.
The patented technologies also eliminate the need for bulky traditional "can" tuners, which substantially reduces the cost of developing thin, flat panel TVs.
"CrestaTech has been driving and is continuing to drive the technology that made silicon tuners ubiquitous in flat panel TVs. Others have chosen to unfairly profit from our inventions. Today we have taken decisive steps to right this wrong," states Torbjorn Folkebrant CEO of CrestaTech.
