SEMICON Singapore 2014 to focus on IoT

News

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the latest catchphrase for the interconnected and web-based nature of items in postmodern, urban everyday life - from home automation and wireless baby monitoring to smart appliances and touch displays.

Enabling mobility for such applications is an upward trend that today's most advanced electronic device makers are running to take on.

SEMICON Singapore 2014, one of Southeast Asia's largest annual gatherings for the semiconductor manufacturing industry, will focus on advanced technology developments from the entire microelectronics ecosystem to enable mobility for IoT.

Well established for twenty years in Singapore, the semiconductor trade event is gearing up for the future by featuring the enabling technologies that translate advancements in semiconductor technology towards IoT applications.

Southeast Asia's semiconductor show that encompasses the entire semiconductor ecosystem will feature exhibitors showcasing the latest processes, materials, tools and technologies used in the manufacture of today's most advanced electronic products.

The exhibits, programmes and workshops will examine how emerging technologies impact the manufacturing landscapes and explore how device makers position themselves to tackle the needs of the future.

Attracting an audience from every segment of the global microelectronics industry, SEMICON Singapore also offers business matching and networking opportunities for businesses actively expanding within the Southeast Asian region.

Aligning to the theme this year, Internet-of-Things, there is a showcase of the future of SMART Living, visitors will be able to witness and experience the magic of semiconductor technologies, how it's going to change and enhance our everyday lives. There will be a "LIVE" Demo of SMART Home Automation, Driverless Car and many more at the SMART Pavilions.

What's more, the event will feature special programmes and forums to highlight the industry's major technology trends, and investment and expansion opportunities in manufacturing.

These include a forum on Market Trends Analysis, where SEMI, together with executives from Yole Développement, UBS, GfK Southeast Asia, Merrill Lynch and SurplusGlobal will provide insights to the key trends driving microelectronics growth worldwide and the challenges ahead for the Southeast Asian supply chain.

Another forum, Fabless/IDM Technology Challenges, will feature perspectives from Broadcom, Intel, Silicon Laboratories and Xilinx on the emerging industry dynamics paving the way for growth in the mobility and IoT space with emphasis on Singapore's semiconductor landscape.

Yet a dazzling high-tech industry is not sustainable without an equally strong and talented workforce of engineers and technologists capable of designing intricate microelectronics, as well as the complex manufacturing equipment, new materials, and precise processes needed to manufacture them.

SEMICON Singapore 2014 will address the issues of workforce development by showcasing programmes that nurture Southeast Asia's skilled workforce to drive the future growth of the industry.

"SEMI Southeast Asia works closely with local government agencies and the tertiary institutions to embrace the development of young talent and working professionals into future leaders of the industry," comments Ng Kai Fai, president of SEMI Southeast Asia.

"I am particularly pleased that this year at SEMICON Singapore, we are continuing our commitment to cultivate the best talent in Southeast Asia for our member companies and industry by presenting SEMICON University Programme and the Job Fair for the second consecutive year - plus new this year, an online job portal helping companies connect with the best available talents," Ng Kai Fai concludes.

Employing approximately 42,000 people, Singapore's semiconductor industry is one of the most advanced hubs in the region, constituting much of Singapore's economic growth. It contributes over 5 percent of the nation's GDP and 37 percent of all R&D spending by the manufacturing industry.

SEMICON Singapore 2014 runs from 23rd to 25th April at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
