ASUS Selects Altair For New LTE Chromebook
Altair Semiconductor, a developer of high-performance, single-mode LTE chipsets, has announced that ASUS, a consumer notebook vendor, has selected Altair's LTE chipset for a new Chromebook.
While Wi-Fi is a standard feature, 4G LTE has only recently been introduced to Chromebooks. Altair's FourGee-3100/6202 LTE chipset, certified to run over Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, provides ASUS Chromebook users with a 100Mbps broadband internet connection.
"We are pleased to provide a trailblazer such as ASUS with an 'always connected' solution," said Eran Eshed, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Altair. "Users today are either confined to Wi-Fi hotspots or experience noticeable speed degradation when switching to 3G networks. That's why LTE solutions are ideal for Chromebooks. An LTE-enabled Chromebook provides users with a seamless experience, better mobility, and faster response time, all critical for effective and enjoyable cloud computing."
Chromebook sales continue their upward trend, with shipments rising 67 percent in the third quarter of this year over the prior three months, according to ABI Research. Increased consumer demand for Chromebooks is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, according to ABI, with an expected doubling of sales in 2014 compared to last year.
